Baker, Sir Henry Williams

Baker, Sir Henry Williams
(1821-1877)
London-born hymn writer, the son of Vice-admiral Sir Henry Loraine Baker, who served with distinction at Guadaloupe in 1815. Young Henry attended Trinity College at Cambridge, was ordained in 1844, and spent most of his career as vicar of Monkland Priory Church in Herefordshire. He assumed the baronetcy in 1859. From 1860 to 1877 he was editor-in-chief of the Anglican Hymns Ancient and Modern. He held the doctrine of the celibacy of the clergy, and at his death the baronetcy devolved on a kinsman. He was the author of Daily Prayers for the Use of Those Who Have to Work Hard, as well as of Daily Text-book and of some tracts on religious subjects. He wrote twenty-three hymns, translated nine and composed two hymn tunes. Seven of his hymns are in the current Ancient and Modern hymnbook. One of his best-known hymns is the paraphrase of Psalm 23, "The King of Love My Shepherd Is."
